How to Think like Leonardo DaVinci

    <lj:music>Bernstein: The Mass</lj:music>

My latest book: Think Like Leonardo was a winner. It changed my life. But not in the way I expected.
First, the book contains a nice summary of Davinci's life and times. Then it introdues the seven principles (or steps) that guided DaVinci and can guide any of us to thinking like a genius.
Leonardo excelled in so many areas, science, art, philosophy, politics, construction, and on and on. So, you'll have to read the book to get the seven steps, because they are always presented in Italian, and then explained, and I don't feel like explaining them in my little journal today.
But I will tell you how it changed my life. It was in a little way that may have big consequences.
I was having trouble concentrating and focusing and dealing with a large increase in work. The final chapter talks about "mind-mapping" and putting your life thoughts on a large, blank paper. That was a breakthrough for me because I am so linear and strict. So, I got a big 11x17 paper, starting putting all my projects down on it, days of the week, lunches i wanted to have, night plans, and then got more paper and did it again in a more calendar format. With that, "mine eyes were opened" and I felt I could accomplish all. I even wrote down the things I didn't want to do. I hope I don't neglect them.
But I shall at least move forward. It's going to be a good week.

    <lj:music>Silent Morning</lj:music>

Well, I couldn't sleep anymore, because I guess I got enough sleep. Here it is 5:30 a.m. When's breakfast?

Anywho, I kept thinking of two incidents in my life 25 years apart, and it made me more and more awake, so I got up to put them into this journal and then I can rest about them.

Back in 1979 or 1980, Phyllis and I visited Pauline and Bob in California, and Pauline was so excited to take us to some of the most beautiful sights, including Carmel. The beach at Carmel is indeed beautiful and much written about. But as we walked along, there were lots of California couples enjoying the sand and we had to walk around them. I watched in horror as the woman took an empty glass beer bottle and covered it up with sand. This is the famed environmentally-conscious California mentality? I was furious. I told her something like, "I hope I don't step on that glass and cut my foot." She just laughed and said I wouldn't. Ok, no conscience, either. This has colored my view of California and Californians forever.

Back in 2005, I was sitting in the Target parking lot in Lafayette, and a woman parked across from me. She opened her car door and placed her trash, consisting of various cups and napkins, onto the parking lot. Then she got out of the car and proceeded to the store. Once again, my fury knew no bounds. It must have showed. I got out and said, "Don't you think you should pick up that trash?" Of course, she acted dumb, but I told her I watched her take it out of her car. At this point, she turned around and did pick up the trash and I watched her (and she knew it) bring it to the handy trash can in front of the store.

I still think of those two events, but perhaps now that I've blogged about them, I can rest easy. Learn to let go and move forward, John.

At least I didn't insult these people. Like saying, "Two things would make this place more beautiful: less trash and you leaving." Hahah.

Visit the Comeaux family web sites:
Michelle's, David's Julie's, and, of course, my Flickr Photo Page.
Enjoy Lafayette Life for old time photos and stories.

I finished The Last Best Hope, a mystery or is it suspense novel by Ed McBain. The only thing to say about it is that it was told out of order, they way people today think is "modern". OK, one more thing I'll say about it is that very few authors can read aloud, I should say perform, their own audio books. I couldn't tell who was talking sometimes because the reader, that is the author, hardly changed his voice at all from man to woman or character to character. And one more thing I'll say about it is that it was old lin a mish mash, mixed-tense mode (sometimes in the present tense, sometimes in the past tense).
Hey, I just read on his fan website that he passed away last year. And Ed McBain was his pen name. Well, he had a great life as a writer.

Mais, cher, we passed a good time, yeah, at Randol's Rrestaurant. Our good friend Kevin and his two wonderful children called us and said, "Let's fais do do!" Ok, he didn't say "fais do do" but that's what he meant - to have a Cajun party, listen to Cajun music, and eat Cajun foods. The crawfish were mighty spicy, and the crabs were full-full. The Cajun band, Louisiana Tradition, was excellent, and Kevin can really dance - he took Phyllis around the floor a few times. John tried, but it was not even funny - kinda sad. Should have had my kickers on - oh, I don't own any boots.
Grandmére joined us at Kevin's special request, and brought along her specialty - Strawberry pie. After the fun at Randol's, we came to the house and John showed off his new MacMini, then Kenneth and Jenn played some drums a while. Jenn also enjoyed the dominos a lot.

Everyone says what a great place Randol's is, but really it's the people you share your good times with. Thanks for inviting us, Kevin.
Wow, I sped through two books while things were flying by, so Here we Go!
1. Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook has Gone Before by Tony Horowitz
This book is a journal and exporation of Captain Cook's three journeys around the world. The writer visited nearly every country, island, and bay that Captain Cook discovered, trying to get fully engaged in the man, his origins, and his ambitions, and especially the circumstances of his death. I enjoyed this book immensely and learned a great deal about Cook, especially since prior to this my answer to the question "Who was Captain Cook?" would have been something like, "Peter Pan's nemesis?"
2. Fortune's Rocks, by Anita Shreve.
I was not expecting to read a "Romance" novel this year. Well, now I have, and I know why people read these things. You get very much involved in the story, however contrived, and your emotions go on a little wild ride. The writer was still maturing when she wrote this, I suppose, because some of the characters are a bit stiff, stuffy, and stereotyped. I give the author credit for a powerful courtroom scene and for creating a heroine who is flawed, but still completely likable. The last book I read from the author, Light on Snow is all the more remarkable for the maturity, the symbolism, and the realism of the characters. And in both books, the listener/reader is immersed in the story within the first paragraphs.

Visit the Comeaux family web sites:
Michelle's, David's Julie's, and, of course, my Flickr Photo Page.
Enjoy Lafayette Life for old time photos and stories.

    <lj:music>There's a Kind of Hush</lj:music>

So grab for all the gusto, no wait, that's a beer commercial.
I read Michelle's, and Julie's, and then David's blogs, and I am going to try and put my own life down here on this electronic note pad, but it won't be much compared to theirs.
We visited Bedford, as I said before. We had a real workout climbing stairs and moving furniture, but thankfully we also had Michelle's many friends - Donovan, Hotch, Marissa, Christina, and of course, Mel and Michelle.
We also had a blast visiting with Jon and Rose and Tammy. Of course, Kylee came by with her mom Laurel. And yes, Michelle is right, Eddie the Kittie is a Cutie. All shaved on his body, but long-haired on the tail, legs, and furry face.
For some strange cosmic reason, the camera stayed behind in the drawer, so there will be no photos of the entire weekend. It's like it only exists in the twilight zone.
So what else?
So I ordered a new computer. Don't tell my current computer, they tend to get really jealous. But after six years together, the computing world has moved on, and I cannot do what I want to do with my old computer, and that's stream music to my living room stereo, plus burn movies onto DVD's. Heck, were there even DVD's in the year 2000? I mean, DVD burners? Oh, I am getting the AirTunes Express also. The new computer is 2 inches tall. Isn't that so cute? And, what the heck, an iPod too. Yes, a video iPod. I had a generous bonus this year. Oh, and thanks for the bonus, all you gas-guzzlers out there.
I am also looking at a complete patio re-do, with a built-in BBQ station, sink, expanded patio deck, landscaping.
Next weekend I begin looking over my taxes from 2005, and who knows, maybe that will put the kabash on the backyard landscaping.
Thursday night is a big night, because the Knights of Columbus present some awards to Catholic Youth Leaders in our parish. I have been busy with applications and awards and things, so this is the big hoorah for it all. Phyllis will come up with a dish for it, probably some fruit salad.
And today I must call Regina and find out how the cruise went. Then I will call Pat and see if she went on the same cruise. haha.
Phyllis will present a few of the photos from the Mardi Gras party they held in her department for the four children who achieved their goals. If you haven't seen the photos yet, visit the Flickr site and look for Kids Goals.

Visit the Comeaux family web sites:
Michelle's, David's Julie's, and, of course, my Flickr Photo Page.
Enjoy Lafayette Life for old time photos and stories.

French Quarter Festival is a Geaux!

New Orleans - The 23rd Annual French Quarter Festival, April 21 – 23, 2006 will take place as scheduled. This free community event employs over 100 musicians and provides an estimated economic impact of $75 million for the city during the three days of activities. “We are committed to play our part in New Orleans recovery” said Jon Stern, FQFI Board President. “French Quarter Festival not only provides jobs for musicians but also is a big draw for tourists who are an economic must for New Orleans. But the best part is we put smiles on thousands of peoples’ faces.” French Quarter Festival provides many opportunities for families locally, as well as nationally, to come down and have fun in the Quarter. There will be over 10 music stages, the World’s Largest Jazz Brunch, children’s activities, an art show and much more for all ages to enjoy. In 2006 French Quarter Festival will have locations set up for donations to benefit a local musicians’ fund (to be named later) and provide opportunities for other non-profits to gain exposure. “Local musicians are our lifeline, they make our Festival possible. It is a great opportunity for us to help them out as much as we can.” said Kathleen Alter, the new French Quarter Festival CEO.

FQFI would like to dedicate this year’s French Quarter Festival to all New Orleanians whom we lost due to Hurricane Katrina, as well as those who survived and will play a vital role in bringing back our wonderful city.

Volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information on either, please call the Festival office at 522-5730 or email at feedback@fqfi.org.

French Quarter Festival
Date: April 21-23, 2006
13 stages
40+ food booths

Satchmo Summer Festival
Date: August 3-6, 2006

Christmas New Orleans Style
December 2006

</ br>
Visit the Comeaux family web sites: ,
Michelle's, David's Julie's, and, of course, my Flickr Photo Page.
Enjoy Lafayette Life for old time photos and stories.
